Holy Water. In the Colombian Caribbean region, colorful jerry cans for collecting water are eloquent appendages of half-finished aqueducts and their deficient operation. In the department of Magdalena, for example, 20 out of 30 municipalities reported water quality not suitable for human consumption (National Institute of Health, 2013). Many households rely on informal vendors, facing both health risks and high prices. Child morbidity is higher than in other regions of the country. Children and mothers spend time traveling to obtain water or waiting for vendors by the roadside.
